Charles L.Depollier

This is the man who invented this waterproof screw down crown in this building that gave us the world’s first waterproof wrist watch, the Waltham Depollier “Field & Marine”.

Today we honor the maverick, the inoc, the legend Mr. Charles Leon Depollier. 102 years ago today Charles L. Depollier (1868–1940) had is waterproof screw down crown patent application granted by the United States Patent Office.

By doing so Mr. Depollier changed the entire direction of the watch manufacturing industry. He is also responsible for giving us the watertight crystal and the fully hermetic wrist watch case, just to name a couple. Look down at your watch for a moment, those spring bars that are attaching the watch strap to the case, he invented and patented those too back in 1916.

We tip our hats to you Sir! Your contributions to the watch industry will echo in eternity and with the 2021 re-issue we will honor your legacy and genius.
