TRENCH WATCH

The trench or field watch was developed for use by the military during World War I, as pocket watches were not practical in combat. It was a transitional design between pocket watches and wristwatches, incorporating features of both. With the Field & Marine Waltham invented the first waterproof, dust-proof and mustard gas proof watch. Today, the trench watch is an iconic watch design which combines classical elegance with the practicality of a military watch.

DESIGN DNA

The design DNA of the Field & Marine is found in the crown and crown protection area. This area distinguishes the Field & Marine from any other watch. Historically, the bayonet crown, the screwed bezel, and the "compressor" case-back assured the water-resistance, making it the first waterproof wristwatch ever made. Today the Waltham Field & Marine is the only watch with a bayonet crown.

The dial and case design are inspired by the original 1918 model and have been updated in a subtle but noticeable way to meet today's aesthetic and usability requirements.

THE ORIGINAL PATENT

The bayonet crown of the Field & Marine has been developed on the basis of the original patent granted on January 28th in 1919. In total four patents for screw down crowns have been filed between 1917 and 1919 by the Depollier-Waltham team.

The Field & Marine Saga

The book ""The Inconvenient Truth about the World's First Waterproof Watch", by NAWCC awarded Waltham and WWI watches historian Stan Czubernat, documents the story of the ingenious Charles Depollier and his waterproof wristwatch technology. His collaboration with Waltham resulted in the first waterproof watch, the Waltham Field & Marine.

Why should you own this watch?

The first

In 1918 the Field & Marine became the first waterproof watch. Ten years before any other manufacturer. This makes it a historically significant and collectible watch.

Bayonet crown

The only watch on the market today with a bayonet crown. A uniquely robust and user friendly technology from the beginning of the 20th Century.

Hall of Fame

The Field & Marine is displayed in the permanent exhibition of the Musée international d'Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The hall of fame of horology.

Legacy

Worn by WWI soldiers and explorers of the air, sea and land in the beginning of the 20th century. The watch worn by those who shaped the world we live in today.
